Welcome we are Hardwood Design Inc.

The master woodworkers at Hardwood Design Inc. have been involved in stairbuilding for decades. Since the early 1980s, we have taken part in the creation of many impressive and challenging staircase projects throughout the region. We also offer homeowners, architects, builders, lumber yards and millwork shops a wide array of products created on-site at our Exeter, Rhode Island, workshop. Whether you are looking for a small parts-only package or the entire design and installation of your home’s central staircase, there is no undertaking too big or too small for us to tackle. We pride ourselves in providing both a superior product for our customers as well as being a resource for anyone looking to learn more about the trade.

Featured Projects

White Oak Straight Stair

This Boston stair project made of solid and veneer rift white oak, was modeled in Rhino and the complex rail components were cut on a 5 axis CNC machine.  All the stair sections were prefabricated in the Hardwood Design shop and then set in place in the field.  In spite of the simple clean design, this was an extremely challenging job because all components and sections had to align perfectly with no moldings to cover joints.  Designed by Butz & Klug Architecture (www.bkarch.com) in a home built by Pomeroy & Co. (www.pomeroyco.com ).  Photography by Millicent Harvey.

Contemporary Curved Stair

The craftsmen at Hardwood Design worked with Steven Harris Architects and Seadar Builders to create this masterpiece. This incredibly detailed job required a model be built to make sure no detail was missed. The curve in this elliptical stair required highly specific measurement and attention. Walnut treads and risers were used to give an up to date yet classic look.

The ribbon look of this elliptical stair has gained much attention. It seamlessly fits into the home and is a statement piece of architecture.
